Become a Backyard Beekeeper

Last Modified December 26, 2016 By Staff Writer

If you want to start your own beehive then there are few factors that you need to know about to understand the inner workings and have a effective beehive. There are three types of bees within the hive which are: the queen, worker, and drones. Workers are all female which obtain food and water and protect larvae and the hive. Drones are the males which their main purpose is to mate with the queen to produce more offspring. There is only one queen and she produces the eggs. There are five different layers to the beehives and when approaching the beehive you need to wear protective gear.

Key Takeaways:

  • The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service estimates that honey production increased to 19 percent between 2013 and 2014, with the average hive producing upwards of 65 pounds.
  • A beehive is inhabited by a colony of up to 80,000 honeybees. From a distance, all bees look alike.
  • The only males in the hive, drones mate with the queen to maintain the population of the colony. Drones do not work and do not have stingers.
