Design is complicated when it needs to encompass two opposing styles. This home in D.C presented a challenge to designer VW Fowlkes when he was required to merge ideals of two styles: modernist versus natural. Fowlkes combined spaciousness with warm treatments and accessories. The hand made cabinets are from a felled tree chosen by the homeowner and show the grain while still appearing sleek. Lighting is bright and modern styled but kept unobtrusive and built in pieces are made of natural materials set into a modern style, easily incorporating the opposites.
