How to Install Subway Tile

Last Modified June 8, 2018 By Staff Writer

Subway tile provides a nice, clean functional look for many bathrooms. So, can you get it without hiring someone to put it in? Absolutely! You will need to clean and prepare your walls for the tile. If you have large wall-affixed furniture items, like a bathroom vanity, you will need to apply painter’s tape along the edge of it. Apply a thin layer of mortar upon your clean and tile-free wall. Then neatly lay the tiles upon the mortar. You should use a level to make sure your rows are coming out even and straight. Place spacers between your tiles. You may have to cut some of the tiles to fit around your electrical outlets and light switches. Once finished, let your tiles dry overnight. At that point you can remove the spacers and wash down the surfaces. Grout your tile and fill in the seams with caulking. Your look is achieved.
