How to Prevent Contact With Poisonous Plants

How to Prevent Contact With Poisonous Plants

Last Modified February 27, 2017 By Staff Writer

When it comes to poisonous plants in general there are some steps that you can take to prevent contact with them. The three major culprits for skin reactions to plants include poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac. The reason that the reaction to the skin is caused by these plants is because all of these plants contain an oily sap called urushiol. After this oil comes in contact with skin it causes an allergic reaction that results in a red rash.

Key Takeaways:

  • Although a number of plants can provoke a skin reaction, three major poisonous culprits tend to cause an irritating skin rash: poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
  • After it comes in contact with skin, urushiol triggers an allergic reaction that usually results in a red, itchy rash called allergic contact dermatitis.
  • Although you can generally identify poison ivy by its three leaves, it has a chameleon-like quality that turns the leaves different colors and textures depending on location.
