Swag or Pendant Lighting

Last Modified January 24, 2022 By Staff Writer

Lighting is often the last element chosen in home decor. A problem sometimes develops when attempting to place lighting where it is most needed without running electrical cords along the floor or trying to squeeze in a lamp where it just won’t fit. An attractive solution is ceiling-mounted lighting such as stylish Pendant Lighting or Swag Lamps. Rattan pendant lights which offer flexible placement and illumination.

What is swag lighting?

Swag lighting is ceiling-mounted lighting that has a long electrical cord that plugs into a regular wall outlet. It is suspended from the ceiling by means of a strong and often ornamental hook that screws into the ceiling. There can also be additional hooks that help the cord run along the ceiling. Usually the cord is not pulled tight against the ceiling, but hangs from hook to hook in a graceful swag. Once the cord reaches the wall, it hangs straight down to the nearest electrical outlet. Often the electric cord is intertwined with a decorative chain for added eye-appeal. The on/off switch may be on the light itself or can be incorporated into the cord.

How is pendant lighting different from swag lighting?

Pendant lighting differs from swag lighting in the means of installation. Rather than using a cord that plugs into an outlet, a pendant light is hard-wired through the ceiling into your home’s electrical system. It is turned on and off by means of a wall switch. A licensed electrical contractor can install a pendant light for you.

What are the advantages of swag and pendant lighting?

One of the major advantages of a ceiling-mounted light is that thoughtful placement gives you the ability to control the amount of illumination it provides. If your objective is to provide general lighting to the space, hang the light closer to the ceiling. If you are in need of task lighting, such as over a kitchen island or a work table, the fixture can be lowered. Also, ceiling mounted lighting won’t gobble up floor or table space as a lamp will–a great advantage in a smaller area.

Having no electrical cords along the floor eliminates a tripping hazard and give the room a tidier appearance. And unlike recessed lighting, swag and pendant lamps can give your room’s design a finishing touch. If you want to include a natural element or perhaps add a sculptural look to the room, consider a large wicker pendant light. You can choose a very simple streamlined light or grab your visitors’ attention with something spectacular. Either way, ceiling-mounted swag and pendant lamps can make your special spaces truly luminous.
